Burnout Is Rising. Here's What You Can Fix | Harness Blog
Blog post from Harness
Burnout among technology workers is increasing alongside declining career optimism, with concerns focused less on AI-driven job loss than on unsustainable workloads and higher output expectations. Harness’s February 2026 survey of 700 engineers found a strong correlation between deployment failure rates and burnout: only 4% of managers at organizations with failure rates below 11% reported constant team burnout, compared with 55% where more than 30% of deployments failed. Teams deploying daily or faster reported the highest average failure rate, suggesting that speed without reliable delivery practices can create more incidents, manual recovery work, and late nights. Although 84% of respondents said AI reduced burnout by helping developers produce more, the article argues that AI has also raised expectations without necessarily improving the delivery systems supporting increased output. It recommends reducing manual release steps, automating approvals and evidence gathering, using canary or blue/green deployments for quick recovery, and applying AI to remediation tasks, citing Citi’s automated pipeline as an example of achieving rapid releases with automated controls in a regulated environment.
