Burnout Is Rising. Here's What You Can Fix | Harness Blog
Blog post from Harness
Harness’s survey of 700 engineering professionals, considered alongside Lenny’s 2026 technology workforce survey, suggests that burnout is associated with unreliable software delivery rather than AI tools alone. Among surveyed managers, constant team burnout was reported by 55% of those with deployment failure rates above 30%, compared with about 4% at organizations where fewer than 11% of deployments failed, while daily deployers reported higher failure rates than slower-moving teams. Although 84% of respondents said AI reduced burnout, the article argues that AI-enabled productivity has also raised expectations for release velocity without necessarily improving the delivery systems supporting it. It emphasizes that the findings are correlational, but proposes that engineering leaders can reduce operational strain by automating release steps, improving rollback and recovery processes, and using automation or AI agents for tasks such as security remediation. An example from Citi is presented to illustrate how end-to-end pipeline automation can combine rapid releases with automated testing, scanning, and compliance controls.
