Yury Niño Roa, a DevOps Engineer and Chaos Engineering Advocate from Aval Digital Labs in Colombia, presented a talk at Chaos Conf 2019 titled "Hot Recipes for Building Chaos Experiments," where he creatively compared chaos engineering to cooking. In his talk, Yury highlighted the parallels between selecting ingredients for a recipe and designing chaos experiments, which led him to the idea of writing a chaos engineering cookbook. He discussed how chaos experiments can be classified using the Chaos Maturity Model, which considers sophistication and adoption levels, and shared three metaphorical "recipes" for chaos experiments, including attacking applications with Spring Boot and Chaos Monkey, targeting infrastructure with Gremlin, and using Datadog for observing results. Yury emphasized the importance of understanding failure conditions to build reliable systems, drawing on the analogy of cooking as both an art and a science.
