AI coding assistants have sparked discussions among engineering leaders about their potential to accelerate development or possibly replace human developers, but current tools can't replace senior engineers, as they are limited by the context they can process and the complexity of tasks they can handle. Despite this, a significant majority of developers utilize AI to automate repetitive tasks like documentation and boilerplate code, enhancing productivity by allowing them to focus on more meaningful work, such as architecture design. This increased output, however, burdens the code review process, necessitating high-quality reviews. At Graphite, AI is being leveraged to streamline this process with an AI code reviewer that provides instant feedback on pull requests, catching bugs and suggesting improvements before human review. While this AI reviewer has improved over time, finding both minor and complex errors, human oversight remains essential to ensure high-quality software development. Graphite is actively refining its AI reviewer, viewing it as a tool to augment rather than replace human expertise, and is inviting interested parties to join its closed beta.
