Grafana Labs has transitioned from contributing to the Cortex project to launching Grafana Mimir, an open-source storage solution for Prometheus that supports scalability beyond a billion metrics. The increasing popularity of Prometheus has led to various service providers, including AWS, offering Managed Prometheus services, with AWS building its service using the Cortex project. As part of its collaboration with AWS, Grafana Labs enhanced Cortex's scalability and isolation features. Despite this, Grafana Cloud differentiates itself by providing additional features beyond Cortex, such as fine-grained access control, an integrations wizard, and deep integration with other tools like Loki and Tempo. Grafana Cloud also positions itself as more cost-effective and simpler than AWS Managed Service, thanks to its pricing model and the Grafana Agent. Grafana Labs, with extensive experience in Prometheus and Cortex, continues to lead innovations in observability and offers both cloud and on-premise solutions to cater to diverse needs.
