#WeArePlay | Learn how a childhood experience with an earthquake shaped Álvaro's entrepreneurial journey
Blog post from Google Cloud
Álvaro, inspired by his childhood experience of being trapped during a major earthquake in Colima, developed SkyAlert, a technology that uses sensors to detect and report early warnings of incoming earthquakes in Mexico, aiming to save lives by providing people with crucial time to prepare and seek safety. Growing up with an entrepreneurial spirit influenced by his grandfather, Álvaro aspired to create a company with a positive social impact, which he achieved with SkyAlert, now reaching over 7 million downloads on Google Play. This partnership with Google Play has been instrumental in expanding SkyAlert's reach and capabilities, accounting for 35% of its income and enabling continuous investment in advanced technologies and sensors. SkyAlert has proven effective, such as during the 2017 earthquake in Mexico City, where it provided a 12-second advance warning, and in Oaxaca, where a more than a minute warning allowed teachers to move students to safety. Looking ahead, Álvaro envisions expanding SkyAlert's services to cover other natural disasters like flooding, storms, and wildfires, with the ultimate goal of becoming a global company delivering alerts on various natural phenomena worldwide.
