Summary

Google Research’s Coral NPU initiative aims to reduce fragmentation in edge AI by providing an open, ML-focused RISC-V architecture and open-source software toolchain that allow developers to optimize models once and deploy them across devices with different vendors and power constraints. The completed 32-bit architecture includes scalar, vector, memory, and Matrix Execution Unit components, with the matrix engine designed to accelerate neural-network operations at up to 1 TOPS while targeting sub-10 mW average inference power. Coral Compiler v1.0, built on IREE and MLIR, supports models from JAX, PyTorch, and TensorFlow, translates them into Coral NPU instructions, and is accompanied by simulation and FPGA tools for testing before fabrication. Google has released the architecture’s RTL on GitHub and is working with VeriSilicon and GlobalFoundries to support commercial silicon development. Synaptics has introduced the 400-GOPS Astra SR200 microcontroller series and Coralboard SR kit, while the 1-TOPS Linux-based Coralboard SL is now globally available through DigiKey, demonstrating a shared software workflow for wearables, sensors, IoT systems, and robotics.
