Summary

Google Cloud API Gateway has introduced streaming support in Public Preview, allowing streaming endpoints to use the same authentication, API key enforcement, routing, logging, monitoring, and policies as conventional APIs instead of requiring separate unmanaged infrastructure. Supported patterns include Server-Sent Events, chunked HTTP responses such as NDJSON, WebSockets, and server-side or bidirectional gRPC streams, with connections able to remain open for up to one hour. The capability is particularly intended for AI, agentic, and real-time applications, enabling incremental model responses and progress updates while supporting model routing across Gemini, Claude, and OpenAI gpt-oss models through a single OpenAI-compatible endpoint. Streaming requires no API specification changes and is enabled for new gateways using an `--enable-streaming` creation flag, while general availability is expected to make it standard behavior. The release also adds deterministic gateway hostnames based on gateway ID, project number, and region, simplifying infrastructure automation and environment rebuilding. During Preview, existing gateways cannot be converted, and custom domains, Cloud Console and Terraform enablement, and more detailed latency behavior remain limited or forthcoming.
