Lossless and transparency encoding in WebP

In November 2011, the WebP team announced enhancements to the WebP image format, originally introduced in 2010 as a lossy compression alternative to JPEG, offering better compression rates. The new updates include a lossless compression mode and support for transparency, known as the alpha channel, in both lossy and lossless modes. These developments aim to improve image compression on the web, with the lossless mode achieving significant reductions in file size compared to PNGs, and the transparency mode minimizing size bloat associated with PNGs. The enhancements allow for more efficient compression of various image types, such as photographs, icons, and animations, contributing to faster page loads and better image quality on the web. The WebP team's ongoing efforts focus on refining the bit stream specification and optimizing processing speed to encourage broader adoption and support across web browsers.
