How We Made SPACE INVADERS: World Defense, an AR game powered by ARCore
Blog post from Google Cloud
In celebration of the 45th anniversary of "SPACE INVADERS," a collaboration between TAITO, UNIT9, and Google has launched "SPACE INVADERS: World Defense," an immersive game utilizing advanced location-based augmented reality (AR) technology. The game allows players to explore their neighborhoods and protect Earth from virtual invaders, leveraging Google's latest ARCore technology, including Geospatial API and Streetscape Geometry API, to integrate real-world locations into the gameplay. Available in over 100 countries, the game adapts to various environments, from urban to rural, and introduces an Indoor Mode for areas without Visual Positioning Service (VPS) coverage. The development process emphasized user comfort and the creation of a seamless transition between real-world AR and 3D dimensions, using algorithms to generate paths and enhance gameplay. Continuous updates and feedback have refined the experience, encouraging players to engage in AR mode with rebalanced scoring and highlighting the potential of Google’s AR technology for future applications.
