How a Developer Student Lead Increased Representation in Campus Clubs Through Community
Blog post from Google Cloud
Chloe Quijano, a student at the University of Toronto studying Applied Sciences, noticed a lack of diversity in her field and felt strongly about the importance of representation for underrepresented groups in technology. Recognizing the impact of diverse role models, she joined the Google Developer Student Club (GDSC) and became a lead, organizing initiatives such as the DSC Women in Tech Conference to empower students through connections with leaders from varied backgrounds. The conference, which featured speakers from diverse sectors and included hands-on workshops, attracted over 250 attendees globally. Chloe's efforts expanded to include monthly tech meetups and online career series, reaching over 1,700 participants in eight months. Her involvement with GDSC has not only enriched her own development but also inspired her to pursue a career in tech and foster an inclusive environment for future students. Her experiences, including a summer internship at Microsoft, highlight the value of community and representation in boosting confidence and success in tech fields.
