Evite’s Use of Google App Engine
Blog post from Google Cloud
Evite, one of the oldest social planning services, underwent a significant reengineering process to update its decade-old platform, transitioning from Java to Python, which increased developer productivity. They initially utilized Google App Engine for rapid provisioning while optimizing their proprietary data store, and after successfully migrating user profiles and production traffic, they continued to rely on App Engine for its automatic scaling and system management capabilities. Despite challenges with data synchronization and elevated error rates, Evite found solutions by switching to the High Replication Datastore. While Evite's new platform, incorporating Python, NoSQL, and App Engine, has been well-received and facilitated the launch of new services, the company remains cautious about relying entirely on a single vendor for risk management reasons, necessitating the use of multiple cloud providers. The success of Evite's new web application and its first iPhone app has been notable, and the team anticipates further leveraging App Engine for future projects, while also participating in Google I/O events to showcase their advancements.
