Creating a STEM culture on campus in Uganda

Halimah Bukirwa, a fourth-year software engineering student at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda, embraced the world of STEM through her involvement with the Google Developer Student Club (GDSC) on her campus. Initially unaware of computers and coding, her journey in STEM led her to become a community leader, culminating in her role as the GDSC chapter Lead. Under her leadership, the chapter hosted over 40 events, impacting more than two thousand developers and submitting 11 projects to the annual GDSC Solution Challenge, including the globally recognized crowdfunding hybrid app, MpaMpe. Halimah's initiatives have not only fostered a supportive environment for budding developers but have also led to projects like Alfasente, a payment solutions app addressing UN Sustainable Goal #8. Her passion for technology extends to using the Google Cloud Platform for university projects, and she is eager to explore AI, ML, Data Science, and Cloud Computing further. Halimah is also a potential candidate for the EMEA Generational Google Scholarship and plans to pursue a master's program and internships at technology companies, all while encouraging others to join GDSC and contribute to community-driven technical solutions.
