Android Meet App Engine, App Engine Meet Android
Blog post from Google Cloud
Chris Ramsdale, Product Manager for GWT and GPE, discusses the integration of Google's Android and App Engine platforms with the release of Google Plugin for Eclipse (GPE) v2.4, which facilitates the development of Android apps that retain data via the cloud. The update allows developers to create App Engine-connected Android projects through a new Eclipse project wizard, linking Android and Google Web Toolkit (GWT) clients to a shared App Engine backend. It includes features such as Cloud to Device Messaging (C2DM) support, which reduces app inefficiency by eliminating the need for frequent polling for backend changes, and automated generation of remote procedure call (RPC) code, simplifying the communication between apps and backend servers. This release aims to streamline the development process by reducing boilerplate code and ensuring that updates need only be implemented once across Android and GWT applications. Developers are encouraged to try out the GPE 2.4 Beta, with the prerequisite of installing the Android Developer Tools (ADT) plugin, and provide feedback to the GPE Group.
