Summary

Navigating multiple GitLab projects and groups can be challenging, leading GitLab to explore user-centric navigation through a desktop app called GitDock. Designed for macOS, Windows, and Linux, GitDock provides users with easy access to their last triggered pipelines, recently viewed GitLab objects, favorite projects, recent comments, and bookmarked items, all from a convenient menu bar icon. This tool aims to enhance user experience by addressing the limitations of existing notification systems, which often miss out on critical updates or require frequent checks. GitDock also sends system notifications for completed pipelines and newly created to-dos, emphasizing a user-centric approach. Developed as a separate product to quickly implement and test user navigation ideas, GitDock leverages existing browser history for recently viewed items and is not fully integrated into the GitLab Web UI for performance reasons. The insights gained from GitDock are intended to inform the development of a more user-friendly start page for GitLab, moving beyond the default "Your projects" list that most users currently retain. Feedback is sought to refine and expand this user-centric navigation approach.
