The Dependency Proxy is moving to open source

Docker Hub announced that starting November 2, 2020, it would enforce rate limits on pull requests, affecting users differently based on their IP address or pricing tier. In response, GitLab explored the Dependency Proxy as a solution for proxying and caching images from Docker Hub but found limitations that prompted a discussion about making this feature open source. The initiative aims to partner with the open-source community to enhance features quickly. There are several ongoing GitLab issues to address caching and image pulling bugs, including those related to private groups and storage configurations, and community contributions are encouraged to further develop these capabilities.
