New MCP tools help platform teams scale automation safely

GitLab 19.4 expands its Model Context Protocol server in beta to let internal and third-party AI agents perform broader software delivery tasks, including managing CI/CD pipelines, creating and reviewing merge requests, exploring repositories, handling work items, and, for Ultimate users, triaging vulnerabilities. The release addresses the governance challenge posed by increasingly capable agents by applying one set of configurable controls across GitLab Duo and external MCP clients: read-only tools are allowed by default, while write, merge, and delete actions require reviewer approval unless configured otherwise. New capabilities include detailed pipeline-log retrieval, merge request creation and merging, repository commits and forks, consolidated work-item and vulnerability actions, and a merge-request-created trigger that can launch automated reviews or context gathering after a diff is generated. Most MCP tools and governance features are available on Free, Premium, and Ultimate tiers, while vulnerability tools require Ultimate and the new merge request trigger requires Premium or Ultimate with GitLab Duo Agent Platform enabled.
