Make every AI credit count: See, cap, and reduce agent spend
Blog post from GitLab
GitLab presents its governed software factory architecture and new Duo Agent Platform capabilities as a way for organizations to control the growing cost of agentic software engineering by matching models to tasks, reducing retries through shared context, tracking usage, and enforcing spending limits. GitLab-managed open-weight models including GLM 5.3, Kimi K3, and MiniMax M3 are positioned as lower-cost alternatives to frontier models for routine workloads, based on GitLab’s internal benchmarks. GitLab Orbit supplies agents with a continuously updated graph of code, work items, pipelines, deployments, and security findings, which GitLab says can substantially reduce retries and token use. Duo Agent Platform Impact Analytics and the GitLab Credits dashboard provide spending visibility by team, task, model, user, and session, while credit and usage controls enable subscription-, group-, or user-level caps, alerts, and overrides. GitLab recommends organizations begin by assigning lower-cost models to routine work, enabling Orbit for heavily used agent groups, and monitoring usage against production outcomes before adjusting limits and model choices.
