Introducing the next generation of the GitLab.com Container Registry

GitLab is advancing to the second phase of migrating its Container Registry to a new version featuring a PostgreSQL backend, which will improve storage visibility, performance, and functionalities such as metadata for tags and UI redesign. The update addresses limitations of the previous Docker Distribution registry by allowing better API feature development through enhanced metadata storage. Starting from April 18, 2022, this migration will proceed in phases—first with GitLab.org repositories, then moving to Free, Premium, and Ultimate tiers, concluding by July 8, 2022. The migration focuses on tagged images, leaving behind untagged ones, which will become inaccessible but are subject to continuous online garbage collection if they remain unreferenced for over 24 hours. A short read-only period will be enforced per repository to ensure consistency, but the process is automated, requiring no user action unless they wish to preserve untagged images by tagging them. GitLab encourages users to activate Container Registry cleanup policies to aid this transition, which ultimately aims to provide a modern and scalable product.
