Spam and abuse pose significant challenges to GitLab.com users, affecting workflows and brand reputation, prompting GitLab's security team to implement various measures for detection and mitigation. GitLab employs filters like Akismet and reCaptcha, alongside user-defined configurations, to combat malicious activities such as account takeovers and spam distribution. For self-managed instances, administrators are advised to use tools such as Two-Factor Authentication (2FA), sign-up restrictions, and rate limits to prevent and manage abuse effectively. GitLab also provides mechanisms for reporting abuse and continues to explore new automation and tooling to enhance spam prevention and detection. The Trust and Safety team is actively working on developing new methods, such as alternative captcha options and URL posting restrictions, to further safeguard users and improve user experience. Users are encouraged to contribute suggestions for improving these measures via the GitLab Project's feature proposal channels.
