GitLab's shift to automating the merge of GitLab Core into GitLab Enterprise, initially a manual process fraught with conflicts due to its fast development pace, led to the creation of a script that automates this task using the GitLab API, a Ruby wrapper, and Slack notifications. This automation, implemented in December 2017, involved writing a script within the release-tools project and setting up a CI job with scheduled pipeline runs every three hours. By identifying and assigning conflicts to the appropriate developers, the automated system reduced the workload, minimized bugs, and improved developer satisfaction by eliminating a tedious and time-consuming manual task. The automation facilitated 229 automatic merges shortly after its implementation, showcasing its effectiveness in streamlining the process and reducing developer frustration.
