GitLab Duo CLI takes a task from goal to done

GitLab 19.4 introduces the `/goal` command in GitLab Duo CLI, a goal-driven workflow designed to reduce the repeated human prompting required by conventional turn-by-turn AI chats for open-ended development tasks. Users specify a task and clear completion criteria, after which the agent works locally, makes changes, runs verification, and iterates until a separate model determines the goal is met or a configured limit is reached. The feature retains human oversight by allowing users to stop runs, revise goals, and review verifier decisions at each stage. Initially available in interactive CLI mode, `/goal` is intended to extend across GitLab interfaces, including a forthcoming Slack agent that will enable codebase questions, agent flows, and issue creation within Slack conversations. It requires GitLab 19.3 or later, GitLab Duo CLI 9.17.0 or later, and GitLab Duo Agent Platform access, with availability on GitLab.com, Self-Managed, and Dedicated for Premium and Ultimate users.
