The State & Future of GitLens
Blog post from GitKraken
GitLens, launched in 2016 to improve Git history exploration in VS Code, has grown to more than 14 million installs by providing tools that help developers understand code evolution, blame information, and repository history. Its creator joined GitKraken as CTO in 2021 to expand development resources and ensure the extension’s future, while maintaining that GitLens’ established core features will remain free without requiring an account. GitLens+ adds optional collaboration and visualization capabilities, including Visual File History and Worktrees, free for local and public repositories through a GitKraken account but paid for private-repository use. GitLens 12 introduced major internal refactoring for web and virtual repository support, performance improvements, UX updates, issue and pull-request autolinking, and stash comparison features, all available free of charge. Following community concerns, the separate GitKraken Authentication extension was removed as a dependency, and future plans include making advanced Git tasks, branch comparisons, merge conflict resolution, and commit-history graph visualizations more accessible within VS Code.
