AI Is an Amplifier, Not a Shortcut
Blog post from GitKraken
Analysis of 2,172 developer-weeks using GitHub Copilot, Cursor, and Claude Code found that while heavy AI users show 4–14 times more coding activity than non-users, much of this difference reflects pre-existing factors such as seniority, work type, and team practices. After accounting for these factors, AI’s attributable productivity improvement is estimated at roughly 25% year over year, suggesting that AI primarily amplifies existing engineering systems rather than creating dramatically more productive developers on its own. Heavy AI use was also associated with up to ninefold higher code churn, which can support rapid iteration but may increase rework, review demands, and maintainability risks if not monitored. Organizations are therefore encouraged to assess AI through a balanced set of measures including code quality, churn, delivery outcomes, DORA metrics, and developer feedback, rather than relying on commits or pull requests alone.
