11 Tips for Using GitLens in VS Code
Blog post from GitKraken
GitLens is a widely used VS Code extension that enhances Git workflows through configurable history, comparison, navigation, and collaboration features. Its interactive settings editor lets users enable, disable, and fine-tune features, while blame annotations in the editor and status bar provide line-level commit context with links to related references, pull requests, and issues. File annotations include blame, a recency-based heatmap, and local or latest-commit change highlighting, while revision comparisons can be navigated sequentially or jumped to directly with Alt/Option-click. Users can reorganize GitLens sidebar views, discover or assign keyboard shortcuts, save search and comparison results across restarts, and access guided Git commands through the VS Code Command Palette. GitLens also makes Git references in the integrated terminal interactive, identifies linked GitHub issues and pull requests in comparisons, and offers GitLens+ users a Visual File History view that displays both authorship and the relative scale of file changes over time.
