The next developer interface is ambient intelligence
Blog post from GitHub
AI-assisted development is shifting software work from issuing detailed commands toward expressing intent, while tools such as GitHub Copilot can gather repository context, plan tasks, edit files, run tests, diagnose failures, and produce pull requests within developer-defined boundaries. Developers remain responsible for architectural choices, safety, quality, and whether solutions meet customer needs, making judgment and review increasingly important as routine mechanics are delegated. The emerging workflow depends on portable context, agent connections to tools and services, encoded repository conventions, and controls that let developers inspect, redirect, and approve agent actions. GitHub and Logitech are exploring physical interfaces through the MX Keypad, which can map recurring Copilot prompts, sessions, IDE commands, and multi-step workflows to programmable keys intended to reduce interruptions and preserve concentration. The author argues that such controls are useful only when they meaningfully support flow and retain user choice, while broader questions remain about agent permissions, context retention, credentials, evidence for changes, and coordination among multiple agents.
