Project HydraFusion: Frontier quality via multi-model orchestration

GitHub has introduced Project HydraFusion as a research preview in GitHub Copilot CLI, offering adaptive multi-model orchestration that selects workflows and models across providers to balance coding quality, cost, and latency. Available through the experimental Copilot CLI features on all plans, HydraFusion uses single-model, cascade, or independent critique-and-revision patterns while keeping the underlying complexity hidden from developers. Its design emphasizes comprehensive cost tracking, bounded and cancellable execution, isolated read-only reviews, validation safeguards, and prevention of incomplete repository changes. In offline evaluations against Claude Opus 5 across TerminalBench 2.1, DeepSWE, and GitHub’s internal CheckpointBench, it reported substantial estimated cost reductions while maintaining near-frontier quality, including a 4.9-point quality gain and 67% lower estimated cost on TerminalBench. GitHub recommends the preview primarily for substantial, well-scoped, first-turn coding tasks and plans to use developer feedback to improve multi-turn performance, latency, reliability, safety, and routing policies.
