Our pledge to help improve the accessibility of open source software at scale
Blog post from GitHub
GitHub has pledged to enhance accessibility in open source software by joining the Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD) Pledge, focusing on empowering people with disabilities to contribute to open source, increasing the availability of open source Assistive Technologies, and improving the accessibility of mainstream open source projects. The initiative was originally proposed by Joe Devon in 2011 and has evolved into an annual event aimed at fostering inclusivity in technology. GitHub emphasizes the need to remove barriers such as lack of keyboard operability and insufficient color contrast, while promoting the development and adoption of free assistive technologies like the NVDA screen reader. By embedding accessibility into the core of open source projects, GitHub aims to benefit end users, consumers, and contributors with disabilities, reflecting a broader commitment to creating a more equitable technology ecosystem in collaboration with other organizations and communities. The company plans to continue improving its platform, building partnerships, and supporting open source communities, underscoring that accessibility is an ongoing practice rather than a one-time task.
