UNICEF has effectively utilized RapidSMS, an open-source mobile and SMS platform, to enhance its operational efficiency, particularly during crises such as the 2008 drought in Ethiopia. By implementing RapidSMS, UNICEF was able to drastically reduce data collection and analysis delays from weeks or months to real-time, allowing immediate visualization of data on food distribution at feeding centers. This technological advancement enabled better coordination and faster response times by making information accessible to various levels of the organization, from field offices to headquarters. The ease of use and cost-effectiveness of entering data via mobile phones facilitated quick adoption among field monitors, highlighting the growing importance and ubiquity of SMS technology as predicted by GSMA, which projected 90% global mobile network coverage by 2010.
