GitHub Availability Report: October 2023
Blog post from GitHub
In October, GitHub faced two significant service disruptions affecting Codespaces and Copilot. On October 17, between 10:59 and 13:48 UTC, 67% of GitHub Codespaces users faced issues due to an authentication outage caused by increased load from a new region's onboarding, which was mitigated by manually reducing the dependency load. Post-incident, GitHub is working on scaling improvements, including regional caching and enhanced authentication service measures. Later, from October 25 to 26, GitHub Copilot underwent multiple regional outages due to automated node upgrades affecting code completions, resolved by disabling the upgrade process and enhancing global load balancing. The company is taking measures to prevent such occurrences and encourages users to follow their status page and engineering blog for updates.
