In November 2024, GitHub experienced a service degradation incident that affected notifications for dotcom customers, lasting from 10:56 to 12:03 UTC on November 19. During this time, notifications were delayed by approximately one hour due to a database host being mistakenly set to read-only mode following regular maintenance. The issue was resolved by making the database writable again, allowing notification delivery to recover and any failed jobs to be retried successfully, with full service restoration by 12:36 UTC. To avoid similar future incidents, GitHub is enhancing its observability of database clusters to improve detection times and system resilience during startup.
