GitHub availability report: August 2026

GitHub reported that August was a difficult month for availability amid continued platform growth, with incidents affecting GitHub Actions, core web and API services, Copilot cloud agent task-status updates, and the Kimi K3 Copilot model. The company attributed the most significant disruptions to limited capacity headroom, service-mesh scaling failures, database saturation, retry behavior that amplified load, a cloud-provider regional database outage, and an upstream AI-model provider degradation. In response, GitHub expanded capacity, shifted traffic and database primaries toward Azure, improved database query efficiency and monitoring, adjusted routing and retry policies, added load-shedding protections, and advanced isolation work for pull requests and Actions. Migration progress included running production MySQL primaries in Azure, moving substantial read traffic to Azure, reducing load on an older shared database, and creating additional Actions capacity through job-routing changes. Planned work includes further Azure migration, database and autoscaling improvements, automated circuit breakers, stronger failover procedures, enhanced dependency-failure handling, and continued emphasis on availability and capacity before feature development.
