GitHub Availability Report: August 2024

In August, GitHub experienced a significant incident on the 14th, resulting in a 36-minute service outage across all of its platforms due to a faulty configuration change affecting database connectivity. This issue, which began at 23:02 UTC, rendered GitHub services inaccessible until 23:38 UTC when the problematic configuration was reverted, restoring full functionality. Despite the disruption, there was no data loss or corruption, and the situation was closely monitored until it was fully resolved by 00:30 UTC on August 15. In response, GitHub has implemented stricter database change management protocols and is enhancing rollback capabilities and system resilience to prevent future occurrences.
