GitHub Availability Report: April 2025
Blog post from GitHub
In April 2025, GitHub experienced three significant incidents resulting in degraded service performance, primarily due to configuration changes and resource contention. On April 11, a manual configuration change affecting an internal dependency led to failure for 75% of Codespaces users, which was quickly addressed by reverting the change and enhancing testing protocols. On April 23, a resource contention issue during a schema migration caused a temporary service disruption, resolved by completing the migration and reverting to a stable version of schema change tooling, with plans to improve monitoring and capacity assessment. Later the same day, a configuration change inadvertently removed access for repository migration workers, affecting 837 migrations, which was corrected by restoring access and enhancing test coverage. GitHub is implementing various improvements in monitoring, alerting, and testing to prevent future disruptions, with updates available on their status page and engineering blog.
