Arnis turns any place on Earth into a Minecraft world
Blog post from GitHub
Arnis is an open-source project created by German developer Louis Erbkamm that converts OpenStreetMap and other geographic data into explorable Minecraft worlds, allowing users to generate real locations ranging from small towns to landmarks and even the Moon and Mars. Started as a Python prototype in 2022 and later rewritten in Rust, the project has attracted nearly 900,000 GitHub downloads and around 70 contributors, who have added translations, elevation support, and other features through open community discussions. Arnis maps roads, buildings, waterways, bins, and other documented features into Minecraft blocks, while using converted 3D models for complex landmarks not fully represented in map data. As the sole maintainer, Erbkamm reviews contributions and uses GitHub Copilot and sub-agents to investigate bugs, review performance, improve documentation, and identify regression risks. The project has also found educational uses in classrooms, where students recreate and improve familiar local spaces, and Erbkamm hopes to make Arnis faster, more detailed, accessible, and widely used in schools.
