London's Royal College of Art (RCA) faced a significant challenge in spring 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of their traditional in-person graduate art exhibitions. In response, the RCA collaborated with media company Unthinkable Digital and web development firm MTJ.io to create a virtual exhibition platform using Gatsby, a static site generator, to replicate the art gallery experience online. The project required a flexible and scalable solution to accommodate 850 graduating students' portfolios, featuring a variety of art forms and allowing them to customize their presentation layouts. Despite technical challenges, including integrating multiple data sources and services like Sanity CMS and Cloudinary, the team successfully launched the site within three months, achieving high performance and visitor engagement. The site received positive feedback for its speed and functionality, leading to further collaborations with RCA and highlighting a broader trend towards digital evolution in educational institutions' art presentations.
