Summary

Intelligent MFA replaces uniform authentication challenges with a risk-based approach that evaluates contextual signals such as device familiarity, network reputation, location, login timing, account activity, and password age to classify sessions as low, medium, or high risk. A risk engine weighs combinations of signals rather than treating any single indicator as conclusive, while application policies determine whether users proceed without interruption, face an MFA challenge, or require stronger verification based on both risk level and the sensitivity of the action. Step-up authentication can protect high-consequence activities such as changing account details, resetting passwords, adding payout methods, or exporting data, even after an initially legitimate login. Remembered devices can reduce friction for returning users but should remain only one factor in assessing risk, not a permanent exemption from security checks. By applying authentication challenges selectively, organizations can make routine access smoother while focusing additional verification on suspicious sessions and sensitive account actions.
