Persistent sandbox capabilities vary significantly for human-in-the-loop agents because preserving files alone does not necessarily preserve the live processes, memory, terminals, browsers, debuggers, and tool state present when an agent pauses for approval. Stop/start and filesystem snapshots typically retain disk data but clear RAM and terminate processes, while pause/resume or memory snapshots can preserve running state, although implementations differ in stability, runtime support, and application control. Freestyle is presented as offering explicit whole-VM pausing with fast resume, process and PTY preservation, and released compute resources, while Blaxel provides rapid automatic standby but less direct lifecycle control and requires reconnection to external services. E2B offers memory persistence through a beta lifecycle, Daytona supports memory-preserving pause only for VM-based sandboxes, and Modal provides an experimental, restricted memory-snapshot model that is less suitable for arbitrary live interruptions. Box by ASCII preserves disk but discards memory and active processes, making it appropriate mainly for restartable workloads. Regardless of platform, suspended agents must reconnect to external systems, validate that approved actions remain valid, and store approval records, resource identifiers, and idempotency data durably outside the sandbox so that approval workflows remain reliable.
