How I built Blendmux, Cursor for Blender
Blog post from Freestyle
Blendmux is a platform designed to support AI-assisted Blender workflows by managing multiple linked .blend files, coordinating artists and agents, and providing version control tailored to Blender’s binary project files. Its creator initially experimented with embedding chat interfaces directly inside Blender through custom GPU widgets and headless Chrome, but moved the interface outside the application after recognizing that complex Blender projects require multi-file organization and clear boundaries for parallel work. The system uses specialized prompts and a lower-cost model called Luna to make iterative scene generation more affordable, while Git LFS stores large files and Blender-based component inventories detect, compare, and merge changes to objects, materials, transforms, and other scene properties. Blendmux Cloud combines repository hosting, browser-streamed Blender workspaces, and isolated AI-agent virtual machines, using snapshots for rapid startup and branching and edge-based credential transformations to restrict storage and model API access. The project also explored rendering Blender scenes in browsers by translating Vulkan draw calls and shaders into WebGPU, but abandoned the approach because of its complexity, compatibility issues, and limited performance benefits.
