A review of the adaptability of sandboxes

The comparison evaluates Freestyle, E2B, Blaxel, Daytona, Fly Sprites, Modal, exe.dev, and Boat.dev through four measures of sandbox adaptability: resource sizing, runtime type, network-policy control, and snapshot persistence. It argues that providers differ most when workloads need to change size, networking rules, or execution state over time rather than simply run a standard command on a medium-sized machine. Freestyle is presented as having the broadest documented range, from a 128 MiB BusyBox-based virtual machine to 64 GiB Ubuntu systems, with separately expandable CPU, memory, and disk, external default-deny firewall controls, VPC and tunnel options, and snapshots that preserve memory, processes, and disks. E2B, Blaxel, and Daytona offer varying combinations of templates, microVMs or containers, live egress controls, and stateful snapshots, but face constraints such as fixed or coupled machine shapes, differing behavior across runtime types, or tier-dependent networking. Fly Sprites provide Firecracker microVMs with managed capacity, persistent filesystems, domain-based egress policies, and filesystem checkpoints, though CPU and storage are fixed and durable process-state preservation is not guaranteed. Modal is characterized as well suited to elastic, job-oriented computing but limited for long-lived machines by lifecycle limits and still-developing memory and network features, while exe.dev and Boat.dev offer conventional persistent Linux VMs with thinner provider-level networking and snapshot controls. The review concludes that filesystem snapshots are common but true live-machine checkpoints are less widespread, and that small minimum sizes, independently adjustable resources, provider-enforced networking, and memory-preserving snapshots are central differentiators for adaptable sandbox workloads.
