The GitOps idea
Blog post from Fleet
GitOps is a methodology that integrates version-controlled configuration files with automation workflows to maintain the state of technology constructs such as software code bases, cloud servers, and web applications. Although closely associated with Git, GitOps extends beyond it by leveraging continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD) practices, enabling collaborative work on repositories that serve as a "source of truth." This approach facilitates faster and more frequent changes through automation tools like GitHub Actions or GitLab CI/CD, which manage merges, approvals, and testing. The benefits of GitOps include enhanced collaboration, auditing, testing, and validation, along with increased confidence and resilience in system management. By reducing maintenance complexity and fostering an environment of declarative control, GitOps supports efficient long-term operations and is adaptable across various technology domains.
