Leaving E3 entirely
Blog post from Fleet
Fleet argues that organizations can leave the Microsoft 365 E3 bundle by replacing Intune and Jamf with its endpoint-management platform, Entra ID with Okta, and selected Microsoft productivity services with Google Workspace, Office 365, or standalone Microsoft apps, while retaining separately licensed Windows Enterprise and Defender. Using a modeled 1,000-employee company with Windows, Mac, and Linux devices, it estimates that an Okta, Google Workspace, Fleet, Defender, and limited Microsoft Apps configuration initially costs 4% more than E3 plus Jamf but becomes cheaper as the workforce grows and shifts toward Macs, reaching estimated annual savings of $181,500 in year three and roughly $325,000 over three years. The proposal depends on Fleet’s claimed zero-touch device provisioning without Autopilot or Entra, centralized cross-platform management, API-based configuration, and migrations from Intune without device wipes. It outlines a six-to-nine-month transition involving overlapping licenses, Active Directory retirement, revised Windows licensing, and continued Microsoft tenant accounts for certain services, while citing customer examples and asserting that reduced support needs and lower Mac-related costs may provide additional savings.
