In 2026, the gap between perceived and actual Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) maturity has widened, with AI adoption outpacing underlying automation maturity among infrastructure teams. Although 46% of teams are leveraging AI for infrastructure automation, only 17% have achieved advanced automation levels, leading to a lack of trust in AI agents due to insufficient governance measures like guardrails and observability. The majority of teams still deploy IaC using general-purpose CI/CD tools ill-suited for infrastructure control, resulting in a significant orchestration gap where 90% acknowledge the need for improvements. Configuration drift remains a critical issue, with 35% tying it to costly incidents and many lacking effective detection and remediation processes. Furthermore, rebuild confidence is a top priority, yet only a small percentage of teams have tested disaster recovery postures, hindered by codification debt and unrepresented legacy infrastructure.
