How to Back Up and Restore Microsoft 365 Tenant Configuration with Firefly
Blog post from Firefly
Microsoft 365 backup tools commonly protect user data such as mailboxes, files, and chats but may not preserve the tenant configuration policies that govern access, device compliance, mail flow, external collaboration, and data protection. Firefly positions its Microsoft 365 offering as configuration backup and recovery for tenant administration and six workloads, discovering policy dependencies, taking scheduled snapshots, storing configurations as infrastructure-as-code in Git, comparing changes, and retaining audit evidence. The approach is intended to help organizations identify configuration drift caused by attackers, administrators, scripts, or AI agents, including changes to Conditional Access, DLP, mail flow, application permissions, and Teams settings. It supports restoring individual policies or workloads, rebuilding configuration in a new tenant after a compromise, and replicating policies between tenants, while sequencing restores according to dependencies to avoid disrupting administrator access.
