Some Updates to Apps Using Google Play services
Blog post from Firebase
Google Play services and Firebase SDK dependencies are now hosted directly at maven.google.com, allowing Gradle to download and cache compatible versions without requiring Android build-tools updates; projects can add the repository explicitly or use the google() shortcut in Gradle 4.0 and later. The repository includes Play services SDK versions back to 3.1.36. Apps upgrading to Play services dependency version 11.2.0 or newer must use a compileSdkVersion of at least 26, although this does not require changing targetSdkVersion or alter app runtime behavior. Developers who encounter support-library version conflicts after updating compileSdkVersion should upgrade their Android support library dependencies to version 26.0.0 or later, keeping their major version aligned with the compile SDK version.
