Phone number verification breaks barriers

Firebase Phone Number Verification (PNV), now in public preview for Android, enables apps to verify a SIM-associated phone number through any internet connection, including Wi-Fi, wired networks, hotspots, or cellular data, unlike SMS and Silent Network Authentication methods that depend on cellular connectivity. The service is intended to simplify onboarding, remove manual number entry and SMS one-time passwords, and support users even when mobile data is disabled or devices are in airplane mode with internet access. Firebase PNV currently supports four carrier networks—DNA in Finland, Deutsche Telekom in Germany, Telkomsel in Indonesia, and CelcomDigi in Malaysia—with additional coverage planned. Carrier representatives describe the technology as a way to provide more seamless, secure, and network-led verification while improving trust and digital security.
