MFA, Blocking functions, and more come to Firebase Authentication

Firebase announced an optional one-click upgrade, Firebase Authentication with Identity Platform, that adds security, customization, and enterprise capabilities without requiring migration or changes to existing SDK code. The offering introduces SMS-based multi-factor authentication, blocking functions that enforce custom sign-up and sign-in requirements through Cloud Functions, and self-service SAML and OpenID Connect providers for broader identity integration. It also adds user activity and audit logging through Cloud Logging, multi-tenancy for separating user populations and configurations within a single project, and enterprise support with service-level agreements. The upgrade includes a no-cost tier without a payment method, though upgraded Spark projects are limited to 3,000 daily active users and Blaze projects incur charges above 50,000 monthly active users, with new usage charts intended to help projects assess their needs before upgrading.
