Introducing hybrid on-device inference using Firebase AI Logic
Blog post from Firebase
Firebase has introduced an experimental hybrid on-device inference feature for its AI Logic client SDK for Web, enabling applications to use local AI models such as Gemini Nano in Chrome on desktop while automatically falling back to cloud-hosted Gemini models when needed. The approach aims to improve privacy by keeping sensitive data on users’ devices, support offline AI features, reduce inference costs, and benefit from local hardware acceleration, while retaining access to cloud capabilities on unsupported devices or browsers. Built on the proposed W3C Prompt API, the SDK can be configured to prefer on-device inference, require on-device-only operation without cloud fallback, or use cloud models exclusively, with the default hybrid setup requiring only a mode parameter during GenerativeModel initialization. Firebase has also provided documentation and a demonstration for developers interested in testing the feature and sharing feedback.
