Introducing Cloud Firestore: Our New Document Database for Apps

Cloud Firestore is a public-beta, fully managed NoSQL document database for Firebase mobile and web applications, designed to store, query, and synchronize data globally at scale. It uses a documents-and-collections model with expressive queries whose performance depends on result-set size, while iOS, Android, and web SDKs provide real-time synchronization and offline access through local databases. Client SDKs, Firebase Authentication integration, and configurable security rules support serverless development, while Cloud Functions can run custom backend logic when data changes. Built with Google Cloud, Firestore provides automatic multi-region replication, durability, strong consistency, and automatic scaling, alongside server SDKs for Node.js, Python, Go, and Java. Although it builds on the real-time capabilities of Firebase Realtime Database and addresses limitations in structuring, querying, and scaling, it is not a direct replacement; both databases remain supported and may be used together depending on cost, latency, and application needs.
