Summary

Firebase Phone Number Verification (PNV) has reached general availability following public-preview refinements, including a SIM-less test mode that lets developers prototype user interfaces, use emulators, and integrate testing into CI/CD pipelines without a credit card, live SIM, billing setup, or production onboarding. Test mode uses the same implementation methods as production and can be switched to production by removing the code that activates it. Firebase PNV is positioned as a third-generation alternative to SMS and Silent Network Authentication, enabling consent-based, one-tap phone-number verification even when devices are in airplane mode or mobile data is disabled, provided they have an internet connection. Production support is available on selected carrier networks in Finland, France, Germany, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Spain, with additional networks planned.
